CYBERBULLYING

What is the internet? You may use the internet during school to search the web for research information, read stories, watch educational videos, and even access your curriculum. At home, you may use the world wide web, or go online, to play games, send messages, and watch movies. But what exactly is the internet? The internet is a world-wide communication system of computer networks. The internet is the infrastructure that supports the ability to send information from computer to computer all over the world.

Using the internet to access the world wide web enables us to collaborate with one another and learn new things. It can be a very positive experience when we keep ourselves and others safe and have positive interactions.

Picture yourself getting mud on your shoes and walking through your house. Someone could tell all the places you walked by following your footsteps. The same is true for using the internet. When you use the internet, you leave a digital footprint. A digital footprint is the trail that you leave behind when you engage in online experiences.

What digital devices have you used this week to engage in an online experience?

Types of personal information that can be included in your

digital footprint:

It is important to keep your devices and information safe while using the internet. You can stay safe by securing your devices and creating strong passwords for devices and accounts.

Think about a password as a key. Would it be safe for everyone to have the same key to unlock their homes? If everyone had the same key, they could unlock homes that are not theirs. Would you give someone a key to your house? Having a common key or sharing it does not keep you safe.

The same is true for passwords. By sharing your password with others, they can access your devices and accounts and pretend to be you. A strong password that you do not share keeps others from accessing personal information about you.

When you are at school, you have certain rules. These guidelines keep you safe and help you know how to work with others. Using encouraging words, following directions and rules, and being kind to others help to make school a safe and enjoyable place for you and others.

Think about how it would be if students were mean, said hurtful things, and did not follow the rules. You may not feel safe or want to be in this type of environment.

The same is true about the internet. When you interact with someone and they interact with you, it should be a positive experience.

Remember, using the internet, we can collaborate with one another and learn new things. When we keep ourselves and others safe and have positive interactions, it can be a very positive experience.

based content through the internet.

If you send, or post, negative, mean, or false information to someone, you are cyberbullying.

Information that is communicated electronically is not private. If you engage in cyberbullying behavior, you can get a negative online reputation.
