Current Issue |
Patient 5 has developed a red rash and pus-filled pimples on the skin around his tibial fracture and surgical incision. Additionally, in the soft tissue under the skin of the incision, there is a green pus with a sweet, fruity smell. These factors indicate an infection, most likely aquired in the hospital since the rash is only at the wound site. |
History |
Patient 5 is an otherwise healthy male who suffered a compound fracture of the left tibia during a soccer match. When he got to the ER, the nurse immediately started an IV saline drip with pain reliever so that he could relax enough to have an MRI and X-Ray completed. He had to have surgery to repair the fracture, which included attaching metal rods and pins to hold the bone. He has to have the leg in traction so that no force or pressure is put on the leg at all and therefore will be in the hospital an estimated total of 14 days. The leg will be put in a cast after 10 days. |
